The short version: Standoff is a football trivia game, not an advertising business. You can play without an account. We don't sell your data, we don't run ad trackers, and if you want everything deleted, email standoffgamefeedback@gmail.com and it's gone.
Who runs Standoff
Standoff (standoffgame.com) is run by Dave Byrne, an individual based in the United States, who is the data controller for the information described here. Standoff is played mainly by football supporters in the UK and Europe, so we apply UK and EU data protection standards to everyone, wherever you live. For anything on this page — including requests to see or delete your data — email standoffgamefeedback@gmail.com.
What we collect
If you just play (no account): the club you pick, the answers you give, your score, and when you played. Your browser stores a random identifier so we can apply the one-quiz-a-day limit and avoid repeating questions you've already seen. That identifier isn't linked to your name or email, because we don't have them.
If you sign in with Google: we receive your email address, name and profile picture from Google through our authentication provider. We store a display name you choose and your club. We don't receive your Google password and we can't see anything else in your Google account.
Automatically: our hosting providers keep standard server logs (including IP address) for security and reliability, and we use privacy-friendly analytics to count page views. We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
What's public
Standoff is a public competition, so some things are visible to everyone: your club's total score, and — if you sign in — your display name, club and score on the player leaderboard and in any mini-league you join. Choose a display name you're happy for strangers to see. Your email address is never shown publicly.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To run the game — scoring, the league table, mini-leagues, keeping questions fresh. Legal basis: performance of a contract with you (our terms of use).
- To keep it fair — the daily limit and server-side scoring exist to stop cheating. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a game that isn't rigged.
- To fix and improve it — aggregate analytics and error logs. Legal basis: legitimate interest.
Who we share it with
Only the companies that run the plumbing, and only so they can provide their service to us: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting and analytics), and Google (only if you choose to sign in with Google). We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it to train AI models.
Where your data lives. Our servers are in the United States, and Standoff is run from the United States. If you're in the UK or Europe, that means your information is transferred outside your country. Our providers handle those transfers under standard contractual clauses — the standard legal mechanism for moving data internationally.
How long we keep it
Quiz results are kept for the duration of the season they count towards, which ends 30 May 2027, plus a reasonable period afterwards for historical tables. Account details are kept until you ask us to delete them. Server logs are kept for a short period by our providers.
Your rights
Whoever you are and wherever you live, you can ask us to show you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, object to how we use it, or send it somewhere else. Just email standoffgamefeedback@gmail.com — we'll respond within 30 days, and usually within a day. We won't treat you differently for asking.
If you're in the UK or Europe, these are your rights under the UK GDPR and GDPR, and if you're unhappy with our response you can complain to your national data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Playing without an account? Clearing your browser storage detaches this browser from its past scores. Those scores stay in the club total but are no longer connected to you in any way.
Children
Standoff isn't aimed at young children, and you should be 13 or over to create an account. You can play without an account at any age, because that involves no personal details. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email us and we'll remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we'll update the date at the top and note the change on the home page. Continuing to play after a change means you accept the updated policy.
